Rose centifolia Grasse flowers

In the Grasse region, from late April to May, the queen of flowers is in bloom: the rose. More specifically, the centifolia rose, also known as the “May rose”.
This simple-looking rose exudes a bewitching fragrance, making it a sure bet for perfumers who demand the single centifolia rose, not the double.
It is used in the composition of many famous fragrances, such as ROSE by Roger et Gallet, ROSE TROCADERO by Jardin retrouvé, LA ROSE JOCELYN by Godet, COMME UNE EVIDENCE by Yves Rocher, CHANCE EAU TENDRE by Chanel, MÉMOIRE DE DAISEN-IN, ELLA K, and so on. But in the Pays de Grasse, the visitor may feel baffled, for here there are no fields as far as the eye can see. It’s an emblematic flower of the Pays de Grasse, just like the orange blossom, the iris, the tuberose, the Madonna lily and the violet, but it’s the one I’m going to tell you about that’s the Queen of flowers.
It is celebrated at the Fête de la Rose in Grasse during Exporose, in La Colle sur Loup with the “Autour de la rose” festival, in Plascassier and at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint Jean-Cap Ferrat.
But when travelers arrive in Grasse, they’re taken aback. Where is this beautiful flower, so much talked about and so expensive, hiding?
Where to see the rose fields in and around Grasse.
Take a stroll through the countryside and you’ll discover here and there, hidden behind a hedge, fields of centifolia roses that are a marvel to behold in May.
Here are a few addresses where you can see fields of roses.
First of all, in Grasse’s Saint Jean district, there used to be Mr. Oulmont’s campaign, now run by LANCOME. This large company has invested heavily and from the road you can marvel and smell the flowers. By appointment, you can visit this estate free of charge.
Then, still in the St Jean district, you come across the property of Mr Rodriguez, a very friendly man and co-founder of the “Fleurs d`exception” association. He has a beautiful plot planted with various roses, irises and bigarade orange trees. Still in Grasse, at Chemin de Montmayan and Mas des Source in the Saint Antoine district, you’ll find more fields of roses.
Then at Domaine de la Bastide (ESAT), it’s nice to take a photo of this bastide surrounded by its large fields of roses. This estate is located in Châteauneuf de Grasse, chemin des Picholines, and offers a wide range of delicious products.
In Mouans Sartoux, the 2.7-hectare MIP gardens welcome you. All the emblematic flowers of the Pays de Grasse and much more can be found here.
Not forgetting, of course, Le Domaine de Manon in Plascassier, where tours are organized one day a week.
What to do with centifolia rose
Finally, let us note that Guilhem Codera from terroir-06, who is a farmer-processor-distiller, also has a few rose plants. Guilhem does not make perfume from them, no. Guilhem makes an excellent candied centifolia rose to enjoy on pancakes, faicelles or an ice cream with relish. He also makes centifolia rose syrups, centifolia rose honey and since he distills himself, he also offers rose water.
Of course there are other addresses, …but I’ll tell you about them in a future post.
